In conjunction with Vodafone’s Just Text Giving Service we are endeavouring to raise funds for our free instant result HIV testing service.
Currently we provide testing at our premises in St Albans free of charge to all.
However in order to keep this service going, now that our funding has been withdrawn, we need to raise funds to pay for the test kits, (which cost less than £10 each) and the cost of a support worker to conduct the test, and also to provide support both before, and after the test, as necessary
The kits provide a result within 60 seconds and only require a small drop of blood from a finger tip and therefore do not require a nurse or phlebotomist to take a more traditional blood sample from a vein.
The availability of HIV testing in community settings is still nowhere near good enough in most areas, help us to keep ours going, the sooner someone is diagnosed, the better their chances of survival. Government statistics show that at least 25% of people living with HIV do not know they have it*, and therefore can pass it on unknowingly.
There is no cure as yet, but with modern treatments someone with HIV can expect to live a normal life, but only if they are diagnosed in the early stages of infection. The later they are diagnosed the more likely they are to experience complications. 73 % of people who died from an HIV related cause in 2009 were diagnosed late.*
